A Touch of Texture

The aim of this workshop is to look at many different ways of creating texture, depth and dimension on stitchable surfaces. We will study some of my favourite tips and tricks, along with diverse ways to employ stitch. I’ll show you how the effects are achieved, and then you will have the opportunity to make your own samples, trying out whatever interests you the most. These samples may form the basis of a new piece of work, or they can be collated into a small concertina book for your future reference.

Lesson Plan

Students will be encouraged to experience the effects of various techniques designed to manipulate and distress fabrics, to create surfaces with materials other than the usual fabrics, and to embellish these surfaces with objects, and layers of textural stitching. My aim is to encourage experimentation, and to expand the approach to stitched work.

Requirement List

For the purposes of this workshop, my suggestion is that you work on a series of small samples, approximately 150 x 150 mm. You will need : All your usual ‘tools of the trade’ – scissors, pins, needles, etc. Some plain backing fabric as a base to build your work on to. Calico or cotton, something ordinary. A selection of fabric pieces to use in cloth collage, as a base for stitching – look for contrast and variety in colours; plain and patterned; different kinds of fabrics, nothing too heavy. Include some filmy stuff, like synthetic organza, or chiffon, and any other synthetic stuff you have. A variety of the threads you like to use, and needles to suit your threads. I use mostly cotton perle no.8 or similar, which is a good weight for the work in this class. Also bring some finer threads for contrast, and even something heavier or textured, suitable for couching, if you have it. Maybe some beads or other embellishments. Bring a tealight candle ( or similar ) something to stand it in, and a box of matches. Pencil and paper for making your own notes. I will provide : A small pack of fabrics specific to some processes and some tools A variety of interesting bits and pieces for you to play with Relevant notes There will be a fee of $10 per student to cover these items.
